Junior Engineer (Summer Internship)

A hands-on introduction to the heat network industry.

FairHeat’s Junior Engineer (Summer Internship) is a 10-week paid industry placement designed to give student engineers practical experience and a real understanding of what it’s like to work in the heat network sector.

The internship provides early exposure to a fast-growing, technically challenging industry that plays a critical role in decarbonising heat and delivering net zero. Interns are embedded within project teams and supported to develop their skills through meaningful project work, rather than observation alone.

A proactive approach is taken to ensure Junior Engineers gain broad exposure to consultancy work at FairHeat, building both technical capability and professional confidence over the course of the internship.

What you’ll experience

Throughout the 10-week programme, Junior Engineers contribute to live projects and work closely with FairHeat’s engineers and industry specialists. Typical activities may include:

  • Design calculations for heat networks
  • Heat network performance analysis and optimisation studies
  • Supporting site inspections and commissioning activities
  • Technical data analysis and reporting
  • Exposure to different service areas across the business

This hands-on approach allows interns to apply academic knowledge to real technical challenges, gaining insight into how engineering theory translates into practical delivery. FairHeat’s Summer Internship has a strong track record, with many interns returning to join the Graduate Engineer Scheme after completing their degree. For students interested in long-term careers in sustainable energy, the programme offers a clear and proven pathway.

Features of the programme

A 10-week placement in the heat network sector, one of the UK’s most rapidly developing and innovative industries. Interns gain exposure to real-world projects involving design calculations, performance analysis and site inspections, rather than simulated or hypothetical work.

An opportunity to develop early expertise in a niche, high-demand field. The internship acts as a proven pipeline into FairHeat’s Graduate Engineer Scheme, offering long-term career prospects for high-performing interns.

Interns work closely with experienced engineers and industry leaders, receiving guidance, feedback and support throughout the programme. The collaborative environment encourages questions, learning and the development of professional confidence.

FairHeat is 100% employee-owned, meaning every team member contributes to and benefits from the success of the business. Interns are welcomed as part of the team and exposed to a culture built on inclusivity, sustainability and innovation, supported by initiatives such as Women in Construction (WiC) and FairREACH.

Interns join a friendly and supportive team, with opportunities to socialise, attend internal events and build professional networks that extend beyond the internship itself.
