DESIGN

The design stage is where the vision for a district heating network takes shape, translating feasibility insights into detailed, technically sound, deliverable, commissionable and regulatory-compliant solutions. FairHeat provides expert-led design services that ensure heat network systems, from energy centres through to the buildings, are efficient, cost-effective, and future-proofed.

Our Energy Centre Design and Buried Network Design services focus on delivering scalable, low-carbon, and highly efficient systems, ensuring that heat generation, distribution, and integration are optimised for long-term performance and regulatory compliance. From thermal and hydraulic modelling to material selection and risk management, we ensure that every aspect of the network is designed to meet industry standards, optimised to meet investment objectives, and operational reliability requirementsis considered throughout.

With our technical expertise and , commitment to best practices and commercial awareness, FairHeat helps developers design resilient, high-performance district heating networks that are built to deliver efficiency and sustainability for years to come.

CONSTRUCTION & INSTALLATION

The quality and compliance with original design of a district heat network installation is one of single largest factors in determining its long-term reliability, stability and efficient performance. Installation errors are expensive to fix once the system is operational, causing downtime and customer service interruptions. Clients should be confident the system has been installed as per their requirements before accepting Practical Completion, to avoid experiencing costly errors in installation quality and compliance early into operation.

FairHeat are industry experts in undertaking installation compliance inspections. We know what to look for, and just as importantly, we know how to work collaboratively with contractors in ensuring best practice standards of quality are adhered to. We bring our technical expertise and stakeholder management to the table to ensure a smooth installation phase, where quality inspections are seen as an essential and valuable addition to the construction phase.

COMMISSIONING

The commissioning stage of a district heating project is critical to the long-term reliability and performance of the energy centre and buried network. Due to the size, scale, unique project challenges and constraints, commissioning needs to be considered through the design and installation project phases. There are two key phases to get right; Pre-Commissioning & Commissioning.

Pre-Commissioning focusses on how the system is filled, flushed, pressure tested and treated to ensure that the system is clean, the water quality is inert to limit corrosion, and the joints are integral for the operational pressures it will experience, all prior to putting heat into the system. Corrosion can happen the day following the first system fill, and so ensuring the right process and the executing that process, is critical to avoiding system damage occurring prior to operation, that cannot be recovered. Leaks in operation are expensive and challenging to find and fix, and so establishing a sealed system is essential. Our services ensure the right activities are being executed during pre-commissioning to protect the long term integrity of the district heating asset.

Commissioning focusses on how the system operates under load, ensuring generation and distribution plant varies its output quickly and stably in response to demand. It should also ensure plant is operated in a way that achieves the key performance metrics of the original specification and commercial model, such as generation efficiency, low carbon plant prioritisation and heat losses. Our extensive experience in support contractors in executing complex operational strategies, as well as our expertise in both testing and fault finding control issues, makes us an industry leader in commissioning support.

OPERATION & MAINTENANCE

The management of underground pipework is critical on any heat network, given that issues in this area are typically the hardest to find, and the most difficult to resolve.
FairHeat can give confidence to heat network operators on the risk associated with this crucial area. This includes the diagnosis of problematic areas through the assessment of performance and reliability data, and assessment of pipework condition through a combination of survey services internal and external to pipework.

In preparation against heat network failure that could lead to widespread disruption of heat supply, we can proactively assist with disaster recovery planning, so that in the event of issues, a clear strategy on how to limit disruption to service and quickly mobilise to keep heat on is in place.
