PREPERATION & BRIEFING

For existing heat network operators, maintaining system reliability, performance and compliance is an ongoing challenge. At the Preparation & Briefing stage, FairHeat provides a structured approach to operations and maintenance, ensuring that networks are not only efficient and cost-effective but also resilient to risks such as system failures, poor maintenance practices and regulatory non-compliance.

Our O&M Specification Service helps clients define clear maintenance standards, incorporating best practices from SFG20, CIBSE Guide M and regulatory frameworks to ensure that operational procedures are both consistent and effective. Additionally, our O&M Contractor Procurement Support ensures that service providers meet the highest standards of quality and technical expertise, preventing the common pitfalls of low-cost, low-quality maintenance contracts.

To further enhance network resilience, we support operators in Disaster Recovery Planning, helping them prepare for unexpected failures and emergency scenarios that could otherwise lead to financial, operational and reputational risks. By integrating risk assessments, contingency planning and supplier coordination, we provide clients with a clear strategy for responding to critical failures while maintaining service continuity.

With FairHeat’s expertise, operators gain the confidence that their networks are well-managed, compliant and prepared for future regulatory changes, ensuring long-term performance and sustainability.

FESABILITY

For operators managing existing heat networks, achieving long-term efficiency, reliability and compliance requires a structured, proactive approach. At the feasibility stage, FairHeat helps clients identify performance gaps, assess optimisation opportunities and develop decarbonisation strategies to ensure networks operate efficiently, cost-effectively and in line with regulations.

Our comprehensive feasibility services include Portfolio Reviews, Heat Network Optimisation Studies, Decarbonisation Option Appraisals, Grant Funding Applications and Milestone Compliance Assessments. We work with Housing Associations, Local Authorities, Public Sector and Private Operators to diagnose inefficiencies, improve network performance and align with evolving industry standards.

As the Technical Authors of the Heat Network Optimisation Guidance and Heat Network Technical Assurance Scheme and leaders, FairHeat ensures that clients receive expert guidance on operational and performance improvements, funding opportunities and compliance with evolving regulations.

Whether improving heat loss efficiency, integrating low-carbon solutions, or ensuring regulatory readiness, FairHeat provides clear, actionable insights that de-risk operations and maximise long-term network sustainability.

COMMISSIONING

The commissioning stage of a district heating project is critical to the long-term reliability and performance of the energy centre and buried network. Due to the size, scale, unique project challenges and constraints, commissioning needs to be considered through the design and installation project phases. There are two key phases to get right; Pre-Commissioning & Commissioning.

Pre-Commissioning focusses on how the system is filled, flushed, pressure tested and treated to ensure that the system is clean, the water quality is inert to limit corrosion and the joints are integral for the operational pressures it will experience, all prior to putting heat into the system. Corrosion can happen the day following the first system fill and so ensuring the right process and the executing that process, is critical to avoiding system damage occurring prior to operation, that cannot be recovered. Leaks in operation are expensive and challenging to find and fix and so establishing a sealed system is essential. Our services ensure the right activities are being executed during pre-commissioning to protect the long term integrity of the district heating asset.

Commissioning focusses on how the system operates under load, ensuring generation and distribution plant varies its output quickly and stably in response to demand. It should also ensure plant is operated in a way that achieves the key performance metrics of the original specification and commercial model, such as generation efficiency, low carbon plant prioritisation and heat losses. Our extensive experience in support contractors in executing complex operational strategies, as well as our expertise in both testing and fault-finding control issues, makes us an industry leader in commissioning support.

OPERATION & MAINTENANCE

Maintaining system performance in line with the commercial model is where investment returns and customer service is realised. A perfectly designed, installed and commissioned system will only deliver results if it is maintained to a high standard and expansion works are undertaken to the same quality as the original install. FH provide services in both performance optimisation and asset management to support network operators deliver against their operational targets and financial ambitions.
