Heat Interface Unit (HIU) performance has a major impact on the overall performance of heat networks, both with respect to return temperatures and network sizing.

In order to assess HIU performance, FairHeat worked with industry experts to develop a technical specification for testing HIUs for typical UK heat network operating parameters.

The technical specification has since developed further, and been adopted by the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) as a test standard. This standard and the subsequent test results will ensure that those specifying new heat networks can procure and specify for performance. For up to date information on the standard and test results please visit the BESA website at www.theBESA.com/UKHIU.

The BESA standard is based on an initial regime that we developed as part of a Heat Networks Demonstration SBRI research project funded by DECC (now BEIS). The results of this project, including the initial regime and test results from leading HIU manufactures can be found below. This regime and results should be used for background only, and should not be used for the purposes of comparing HIU performance.
